Gravel riding is taking over the world and becoming the new vogue element of the sport.

In truth there has always been a great following for this type of riding, a way to get safely to work or across town without having to rely on the road, where a few stones and cinder tracks doesn’t have to stop your ride. Traditionally riders would have done this on a Hybrid Bike, a flat barred bike with tyres wider than a road bike, but not a s nobbly as a Mountainbike. With more relaxed geometry meaning a slightly easier and more comfortable ride. Racers who wanted to get a fix of mud, sand and a few obstacles also had the option of a Cyclo Cross bike, one that looks like a road bike, with the drop handlebars, only with a higher bottom bracket and nobbly tyres (not as nobbly as Mountainbike tyres, but nobblier then road tyres). Then a few years ago a few companies started bringing out Gravel Bikes, or Gravel Grinders as my friends in Australia call them, which had the bent handlebars and the wider tyres, the slightly higher bottom bracket and relaxed geometry and not too nobbly tyres and it opened up a while new way of riding.

We’re all for anything that gets people outside so to see a whole range of people be able to ride with these all purpose bikes was great. People could now ride to work on the road without too much time penalty, but could take a short cut through the park or along the cycle path without worrying about getting punctures or losing control due to their wider tyres. They could ride in comfort due to the relaxed angles of the bikes tubes and bars and this meant they could ride further and have bigger adventures.

Gravel bikes continue to rise in popularity and more and more first time riders are going straight for gravel bikes to allow them to access a multitude of riding environments. They really are a great all-rounder, comfortable on a rage of surfaces and one that allows you to ride a bit more freely, safe in the knowledge that you should be able to get through all but the worst of terrains that you might find.

We love a bit of gravel riding and we love to see people out on the trails, so if you’re looking for a bike with a bit more adventure capability built in then maybe you should be looking at a gravel bike for your next steed.
